(j)
three members appointed by PAMUST Senate: and
four members representing regional chambers of mines: and
four members representing regional Uni vcrsity councils or Commissions;
and
( m) one member nominated by the Collaborating Nelson Mandcla Institute
of Excellence (NMI) institutions;

one member representing the African Academy of Sciences;
(2) Mcm hers of Co unci I shall be appoi ntcd for a period not exceeding four
years as the Chancellor may specify in their contracts or appointment, and arc eligible
for reappointment.
(3) In appointing the members of Council, the Minister shall endcvour to secure
that at least half the appointed members or the council arc women.
(4) The Minister shall en devour that at least half of the members of the council
have experience in mineral sciences and mining technology.

Functions of Council
(l) Subject to this Act and the Statutes, the Council shall-
(a)
with the approval of the Minister, appoint the Pro-Vice-Chancellors and
the Registrar;
(b)
appoint the Bursar, the Librarian and other staff of the University:
(c)
Provided that the Council may delegate its duties under this
paragraph to such committee as may be prescribed in the Statutes;
on the recommendation of the Senate, institutc professorships and other
academic offices. and abolish or hold in abeyance any such offices;
(d)
recei\·c and, if the Council considers it proper to do so, give effect to
reports and recommendations from the Senate on those matters upon
which Senate is authorised or required by this Act or the Statutes to make
reports and recommendations;
(c)
cause to be prepared annually a statement of the income and e\pcnditure
of the University during the previous financial year, and or the assets and
liabilities of the University as on the last day of such year;
(f)
submit statements of income and c\penditure reJerred to in paragraph
(c) to audit by an auditor appointed by the Council. and publish such
statements and the auditor's reports thereon:
(g)
cause to be prepared annU<llly estimates or income and C\pencliture for
the Collmvin~ financial year:
