The one-day workshops aim to enhance the knowledge of community leaders so they can in turn advise
others as to possible solutions to problems and where they can go for assistance. Building solid relations with
leaders in the community, including ward coordinators, traditional leaders and Victim Friendly Unit officers,
helped in identifying particular legal issues affecting a community and also meant that the LRF was able to
carry out its activities in a conducive environment.
“I learnt that the surviving spouse is entitled to the late spouse’s estate. I used this new knowledge when
my cousins where fighting over their brother’s estate. I also used this knowledge in advising my family
when my brother passed away.”
In one community the paralegal noted that participants were not aware that child marriages were unlawful,
arguing that arresting the man would cause hardship for the young person and the child that was born.
After the subsequent workshop they understood that it was a criminal offence to facilitate the marriage of
children and receive a bride price for the child. The LRF sought a meeting with the Union of Development
of Apostolic Churches in Zimbabwe (UDACIZ) when LRF Mutare highlighted the need to campaign against
child marriages and that it had been noted that most of the child marriages were taking place in Apostolic
and Zionist churches. The Union admitted that early marriages were a challenge in their churches and
that there was need for action to address this child rights violation. The LRF has as a result embarked on a
campaign against early marriages in the Marange area.
