Information, Education and Communication
(IEC) Material
During the year some 92,200 pamphlets, leaflets and posters were distributed in support of the legal
education work. As a way to reach people beyond the communities that the LRF accesses directly, the
organisation has begun to set up distribution centres for its materials. These are lodged with focal people in
areas remote from the LRF’s offices. To date 57 centres have been established and although it is too early
to assess the full impact, there have already been instances of clients approaching the LRF after visiting one
of the distribution centres.
Primrose, who was in a violent relationship for a very long time, was assisted with court papers for an
application for a protection order after having obtained a pamphlet from one of our distribution centres
in Nyanga. The order was granted. Joyce from Marange came with a case of sharing of property in an
unregistered customary law union having gone through our pamphlet on Marriage and the Law which she
obtained from a distribution centre. Her husband of 12 years had paid the divorce token and sent her away
without anything from the property they had acquired together. However, through the LRF pamphlet she
learnt that she could get an equitable share of the property which they had acquired together. The matter is
being handled by the LRF and is pending alternative dispute resolution.
