Legal Services Programme
The legal services programme offered relief to the indigent, enabling clients to access justice that otherwise
would have been beyond their reach. The assistance was rendered in different ways and, where possible,
alternative dispute resolution methods were utilised as being quicker, less expensive and, given that the
opposing parties often live in the same neighbourhood, avoiding excessive acrimony.
The LRF does not have the human resources capacity to appear in court for all its clients but has
developed expertise in preparing court papers for the client to use as a self-actor. The clients are then
coached so that they understand the process and have the confidence to represent themselves. Mr JM
testified that he was awarded an equitable share of matrimonial property and a decree of divorce after
taking his divorce case as a self-actor. Another beneficiary wrote:
“I am very grateful for the help that Igot from Legal Resources Foundation. I was given legal advice and
through the court papers that were drafted for me I got custody of my minor child and I am so grateful.”
