The primary objectives of this study were to assess the compliance of selected prisons with international and domestic standards on conditions of detention; to consolidate the fi ndings from the prison monitoring project conducted by the Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum (the Forum) and its membership; to make recommendations for reforms and propose key priority areas.

This study investigates the direct and indirect economic costs of police brutality on victims in Zimbabwe, from events related to the social uprising between July and August 2016. Establishing the economic costs of police brutality provides the basis for determining requisite compensation for victims’ loss of earnings; medical and hospitalization expenses; funeral expenses and for the dependants’ loss of maintenance.

In 2014, Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) continued to shape the human rights and legal discourse of the country, relying in large part on its core interventions and expertise, which have stood the test of time, whilst drawing on the potential of the new Constitution, which had come into effect in May 2013.

The report talks about Constitutionalism and Investment in Zimbabwe whereby On the 13th February, 2009, President Mugabe purported to swear into office 35 Ministers and, on the 19th February, 2009, a further six Ministers, bringing the total to 41, ten more than were permitted by the Constitution, and agreed in the GPA. As such, the appointments of these ten additional Ministers were unconstitutional, unlawful, and void – a literal case of executive excess.

The survey probes public willingness to engage with the fight against corruption. Transparency International believes it is crucial to present the public’s perspective on corruption – for it is they who suffer its direct and indirect consequences.

On the 18th of December 2015, the Zimbabwean Government gazetted the National Peace and Reconciliation (NPRC) Bill .This is in line with Sections 251, 252, and 253 of the Zimbabwean constitution that provides for the establishment of an Independent Commission known as the NPRC. The major aim of the public hearings was to collect the views of communities on the NPRC Bill but the task was comprised by a lot of technical, procedural and logistical challenges.

There is a common assumption that the Apostolic churches, the “Vapostori”, represent a “captured” constituency for ZANU-PF when it comes to elections.2 This is undoubtedly a story with some truth to it, but rarely examined in any analytical fashion.

Afrobarometer surveys on Zimbabwe frequently run into criticism about both the methodology and the findings. This was the case with the public release of the Round 7 (2017) survey results. The methodological confusion was answered by the Afrobarometer itself (Howard & Logan. 2017), but another issue emerged from the criticism.

The Research and Advocacy Unit and the Mass Public Opinion Institute conducted a study to examine active citizenship in Zimbabwe, with a major focus on women and youth. Using all the six rounds of the Afrobarometer data from 1999 to 2014 the study looked at “risk aversion” focusing on the risk taking and risk aversion behaviour of Zimbabweans.

This is the second time in this country’s history that the country has been precipitated into a constitutional crisis. The first was in 1965 with the Unilateral Declaration of Independence (UDI) by the Smith government, and second is the coup that took place in November 2017. 1Whilst both looked innocuous at the beginning, the long-term consequences might not be so.

Protests and protests against protests were recorded in the month of July 2016 in Beitbridge, Harare, Bulawayo and Victoria Falls. From July 1 Beitbridge residents and cross border shoppers went on massive demonstrations against the imposition of a ban on imported goods as stipulated in Statutory Instrument (SI) 64 of 2016; the protests turned violent resulting in the torching of a Zimbabwe Revenue Authority warehouse and 36 people were arrested.

This report shows partisan distribution of food aid continuing. Though the instances of this are less than in previous months, even one instance of this would be worrying as the government is mandated by the Constitution to provide for and protect all its citizens.

This report covers recorded incidents of civil and political rights violations from the ten provinces of Zimbabwe for the month of March 2015. The report also highlights the food situation in the provinces and focuses on how food and other aid continue to be used as a political tool.

This Training Toolkit is a guide for Human Rights Monitors training. The guide provides an overview of the practice of citizen journalism and early warning and early response systems. Human Rights Monitors will learn different ways of assessing the socio-political and economic environment that can potentially cause conflicts within communities.
