NPRC Unpacks its Strategy
In an interview with the Herald on 21
July, 2019 Commissioner Chiradza
highlighted that the NPRC is working
on finalising its strategy which
prioritises Gukurahundi that should
be completed by August, 2019. The
strategy will address issues such as
public hearings, exhumations and
reburial of victims.

On 23 July 2019, the NPRC was in Tsholotsho to capture the
suppressed voices of women affected by violence and
conflict and discuss how to overcome the effects. Main
issues raised by participants included sexual violence,
economic exclusion, education and political segregation.
From 25-26 July 2019 the NPRC was Maphisa, Bhalagwe
engaging stakeholders and community members on
Gukurahundi. The outstanding issues discussed were the
NPRC’s independence, the need for truth-telling ,
consultations with all stakeholders in TJ processes,
protection of reports/documents, an apology from
government in relation to Gukurahundi, protection and
reservation of sites of memory, among others.
Follow-up on the 2018 Elections’ Observation
Recommendations
On 31 July, 2019 the NPRC represented by the
Commission’s Vice Chairperson Chigwedere and
Commissioner Chiradza met the Zimbabwe Election
Observer Mission led by Ambassador Carson to share and
follow-up on recommendations made in their 2018
elections observation report given the electoral and
institutional reforms needed in light of the 1 August, 2018
shootings in Harare.
Government delays to Comply with the Motlanthe
Commission Recommendations
Towards the end of July, 2019 the NTJWG remembered all those who lost their
lives and were injured on 1 August, 2018.
As we approached the one year anniversary of one of the most tragic moments
of Zimbabwe’s recent past, the NTJWG reflects on the tragic loss of six lives of
innocent civilians while over forty others were injured in the post July 30
harmonised elections demonstrations.
The NTJWG notes with concern the delay in rolling-out compensation for
victims as recommended by the Commission. The NTJWG calls on the
Government of Zimbabwe to expedite this process.
