Chapter 9:20 GENOCIDE ACT Act 9/2000 ACT To enable effect to be given within Zimbabwe to the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, approved and proposed for signature and ratification or accession by the General Assembly of the United Nations on the 9th December, 1948; to amend the Extradition Act [Chapter 9:08]; and to provide for matters incidental to or connected with the foregoing. [Date of commencement: 16th June, 2000.] ENACTED by the President and the Parliament of Zimbabwe. 1 Short title This Act may be cited as the Genocide Act [Chapter 9:20]. 2 Interpretation (1) In this Act— “Convention” means the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide approved and proposed for signature and ratification or accession by the General Assembly of the United Nations on the 9th December 1948, the text of which is set out in the Schedule. (2) Any word or expression to which a meaning has been assigned— (a) in the Convention; or (b) by an international tribunal interpreting the Convention; shall bear the same meaning when used in this Act. 3 Convention to have force of law in Zimbabwe The Convention shall have the force of law in Zimbabwe. 4 Genocide
