International remedies for victims
The new government should take steps to facilitate access by Zimbabweans for human rights
abuses.
The new government should try to make effective use of the Rome Statute of the International
Criminal Court.
It should enable all Zimbabweans to rights and protections of all regional and international rights
instruments by becoming a State Party to such treaties as the Convention Against Torture and
Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment and the Optional Protocol to the
International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. It should also make a declaration under Article
14 of the Convention for the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination. The provisions of all
of these treaties must be incorporated into domestic law.
Conclusions
Over many years innumerable Zimbabweans have fallen victim to human rights abuses. All
Zimbabweans earnestly look forward to a new era in which there is peace and stability that will
allow for equitable economic growth and development and in which the fundamental rights of
all Zimbabweans are respected. As is stated in the preamble to the United Nations Universal
Declaration of Rights “Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable
rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the
world.”
