was Honourable Vice President Responsible
for Justice, Legal and Parliamentary
Affairs Comrade Emmerson Dambudzo
Mnangagwa. At the occasion, the Chairperson
of the Commission expressed gratitude to
the Government of Zimbabwe which had
purchased the three-storey building for the
Commission through the Ministry of Local
Government, Public Works and National
Housing. The building which had previously
been used as a restaurant and night club was
however not ideal for use as offices from the
onset. In order to be user friendly, the building
had to undergo extensive renovations and
refurbishment, particularly on the ground
floor which now houses the offices for Human
Rights Officers and the public reception,
interviewing and meeting rooms, and other
related facilities. This is the space where the
ZHRC clients come for various services, key
among them being the lodging of complaints
to the Commission on alleged human rights
violations and maladministration cases. The
renovations were made possible through
a grant extended to the Commission by the
Royal Danish and Norwegian Embassies.
The Commission also used the occasion
to announce the news about the ‘A’ status
accreditation with GANHRI. In his keynote
address the Vice President Mnangagwa
indicated that Government would continue
to financially support the Commission, and
commended Development Partners for the
assistance they had granted the Commission
thus far He appealed to them to continue
complementing Government efforts in
making the ZHRC fully operational.
