Some victims who were taking part in the discussions noted that material compensations were not good
enough. They felt symbolic compensations of showing actual remorse would help in healing the injuries
suffered for no amount of money can erase the memories of the violations they went through. Particularly
those victims who suffered secondary victimization as patients of HIV/AIDS contracted as a result of rape
or having to look after children born from rape, saw the need for instruments that would minimize
incidences of secondary victimization as healing. Some suggested the setting up of a scholarship fund
through the assistance of government or NGOs to meet the education expenses of the children of rape.
Victims also pointed out that they needed to define the reparation formula themselves, because it is them
who suffered violation.
There were concerns raised on how to compensate for those murdered. It was pointed that death cannot
be compensated for and memorialisation for the relatives who were murdered needs to be set up.
On the question of collective reparations, the participants clearly objected to this approach, as this would
not satisfy the expectations of the survivors of the violence.
