Night Life
Avoiding unnecessary attention
Hang out places in the northern suburbs outside the city are more
accommodative of all diverse people. Avoid bars in the city centre if
you openly present yourself as an LGBTI individual as you increase
your chances of being victimised.
• It is always good to keep a low profile
when you are in a new place, particularly in
a conservative country like Zimbabwe
Food in restaurants costs an average of US$25-00, beers an average
of US$3 to $5 and cocktails average $6 to $10-00.
Places that may be considered to be safer
(not necessarily gay friendly):
• Restaurants
- Maestro along enterprise road
- +Amanzi along enterprise road
- Samy Levy Mall (various)
- Avondale Shopping Centre (various)
• Bars and clubs
- 1+1 at Long Chen Plaza
- Londoners
- Sky Bar at Helensville shopping Centre
- Pariah State at Avondale and Borrowdale
- Sam Levy (various)
Be socially safe
• A lways be in company of a local person who will advise you on the
safest locations for social activities.
• D o not drink too much alcohol or taking drugs that may make you
vulnerable or impair your decision
• Be aware of what you post on social media, as you may expose
yourself to risk
• Be wary of strangers you meet in bars or on online forums as they
may take advantage and blackmail you.
• D o not reveal too much information about yourself or where you
are staying
• Never leave your drink unattended or in the care of a stranger.
Spiking of drinks is common around the world, and you can fall
victim when you travel to Zimbabwe.
4
• Try to dress ‘appropriately’ to avoid
unwelcome attention or remarks. If you
are harassed maintain you composure and
remove yourself from the situation to a safe
place
• Avoid public display of affection by
all means.
