As shown in the figure 5 above most interviewed Tsholotsho communities indicated
that food and shelter were their major concern, followed by education and health.
These communities lost immovable property, small livestock’s, crops due to effects of
floods. Compensation was the least of their priorities. The communities highlighted
that compensation in the form of small livestock, farming inputs and stronger building
materials was necessary to alleviate their perennial problems. Most of the
interviewees cited that the provision of boreholes, and support to start income
generating projects and secure basics needs such as food, health and education.
None of the interviewed displaced communities showed an interest to be relocated to
land on higher ground.
In the Gariya area, the dam’s banks busted resulting in the flooding of homes leading
to their collapse. Small livestock was swept away. Ideally, the Government should
have devised early warning systems in that area and implemented Disaster Risk
Reduction Strategies in line with Article 4(2) of the Kampala Convention.
