(d) or (c) to hold office as member; or (d) if he or she is absent without the permission of the Council from three consecutive meetings of the Council. Chairperson and vice chairperson of Council (I) The Co unci I shall elect a chairperson and vicc-chai rpcrson from amongst its members to hold office for such period and subject to such terms and conditions as arc prescribed in the Statutes. (2) The quorum of the Council at any of its meetings shall be half its total membership. (3) If at any meeting of the council the Chancellor and the Chairperson and vice-Chairperson of the Council are all absent, the members of the Council who arc present shall elect a person from amongst their number to preside at the meeting. 17 Executive Committee of Council (I) There shall be a principal committee of the Council to be knmm as the Executive Committee. (2) The Executive Committee shall consist of(a) the chairperson and vice-chairperson of the Council: and (b) the Vice-Chancellor and every Pro-Vice-Chancellor: and (c) ten members of the Council, of whom at least fi 1e shall be from African countries other than Zirnbab11e. (3) The chai1-person and vice-chairperson of the Council shall be the chairperson and vice-chairperson, respectively, of the Executive Committee. (4) The Executive Committee shall exercise such of the functions of the Council as the Council may delegate to it. (5) Any delegation of functions by the Council in terms of subsection (4) may be made absolutely or su~jcct to conditions and may be amended or withdrawn at any time. ( 6) A delegation of any function by the Co unci I in terms of subsection (4) shall not prevent the Council from itself e\ercising that function. 18 Senate (I) Subject to this Act, the academic authority of the University shall be vested in the Senate. which shall consist of(a) the Vice-Chancellor. who shall be the chairperson, the Pro- Vice Chancellors. the deans, professors. chairpersons of departments and the Librarian, who shall be ex officio members: and (b) one member of the permanent academic stall from each faculty elected annually by such stall; and (c) six students clcctccl annually by the Students· l inion: Prm idcd that such students shall not he entitled to allcnd deliberations of the Senate on matters which arc considered by the chairperson of the Senate to he confidential. 23!
