(2) If the full-time academic stall or the Students' Union fails or declines to
elect a person in terms of suhscction (I )(b) or (c), the Council may appoint a suitably
qualified person to till the n1cancy.

Functions of Senate
The Senate shall have the follo\\"ing functions(a)
to facilitate the advancement of knowledge through research activities;
(b)
to formulate and carry out the academic policy of the University:
(c)
to maintain quality assurance rcgardi ng the academic content and standard
of any course of study offered by any faculty in respect of a degree,
diploma, certificate or award of the University;
(d)
to regulate the programs, subjects and courses of study and the
examinations held hy the University;
(c)
to regulate the admission or students to the University;
(f)
to recommend to the Chancellor, through the Council. the conferment
of degrees, including honorary degrees, diplomas, certificates and
other awards and distinctions of the University and the withdrawal and
restoration or such awards;
(g)
to fix, suhject to consultation with any sponsors and suhject to the approval
of the Council, the times, modes and conditions of competitions for
fellowships, scholarships and prizes;
(h)
to appoint examiners for examinations conducted by the University;
(i)
to cause to be prepared estimates of expenditure required to carry out the
academic work of the University and to submit them to the Council;
(j)
subject to the approval and direction of the Council, to formulate, modify
and revise the organisation of faculties, departments, institutes, centres
and units;
(k)
to recommend to the Council the institution, abolition or holding in
abeyance of professional chairs and other academic offices;
(I)
without derogation from the powers of the Council. to propose changes
to the Statutes;
(m) to make any regulations it is authorised to make by or in terms of this
Act;

(n)
to appoint committees, which may include persons who are not members
.of the Senate, to exercise any of the functions of the Senate, other than
the power to make regulations;
(o)
to make periodic reports on its activities to the Council and to report on
any matter referred to it by the Council:
(p)
to do such other acts as the Council may authorise or direct it to do.
Academic Board
(I) There shall be a principal committee of the Senate to he known as the
Academic Board.
(2) The Academic Board shall consist of(a)
the Vice-Chancellor, who shall he chairperson; and
(b)
every Pro-Vice-Chancellor; and
(c)
two full time professors and one non-professional academic or the
l lniversit), elected annually by the Senate: and
