On 20 November 2019, supporters of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change Alliance (MDC-A) gathered at the party headquarters in Harare for the Hope of the Nation Address which was scheduled to be addressed by the party President Nelson Chamisa. The hostile response by the police who indiscriminately beat the crowd with baton sticks, with booted feet and fired tear gas in the busy Central Business District resulted in many citizens involved in their daily business being injured or bundled into police vehicles.

The month of April also witnessed increasing tensions between the government and its employees with the government failing to respond to the concerns of workers in the public sector. This led to another strike by nurses, which compromised the right to health care. The March 2018 strike by doctors was followed by a nurse’s strike on 16th of April. Vice President Chiwenga responded by firing all striking nurses violating section 65 (2) (3) of the Constitution, which recognises the right of all employees to engage in collective bargaining with the exception of the security service.

The year 2017 proved once again that the human rights violations in Zimbabwe are hardly sporadic violations but are systematic with state apparatus playing a key role. The interdependence nature of human rights was further reaffirmed. As the economic meltdown continued, social unrest increased. The police were the easy tool for the state to deal with social unrest as they continued to use heavy-handed tactics to deal with vendors and silence dissenting voices.

Two major events helped to shape the political climate and human rights situation in the country in April. These were the Independence Day celebrations and the ZanuPF primary elections at the end of the month. The Independence Day celebrations resulted in a marked rise in incidents of coercion as ZanuPF officials in different parts of the country forced members of the public to make donations for the celebrations. The ruling party’s primary elections on the other hand accounted for a noticeable rise in cases of intraparty squabbling and occasional violence as aspiring candidates competed for nomination.

A dark cloud engulfed the country in the early evening hours of the ‘day of love’ February 14 as news of the passing on of the champion and icon of democracy Morgan Richard Tsvangirai filtered. Tsvangirai leaves an indelible footprint in the fight for democracy. In death Tsvangirai who succumbed to colon cancer was saluted even by those who caused him and his supporters untold suffering over the years since the formation of the Movement for Democratic Change in 1999.

Of these victims 35 people (11.6%) were from ZimPF, which is a significant increase from 18 victims in February (4 % of the total 441). The seat fell vacant following the death on 5 October, 2015 of the Movement for Democratic Change-Tsvangirai (MDC-T) incumbent for Nkulumane constituency Honorable ThamsanqaMahlangu. ZESN deployed 14 observers comprising static (polling station based observers), constituency and mobile observers to measure compliance with regards to the Constitution and electoral laws as well as to identify gaps in the electoral practice to enable informed advocacy interventions for electoral reforms.

When ZPP team arrived at the site they were mobbed as gold panners thought they were ‘sponsors’. The gold panners tried to ‘sweet talk’ our team claiming that by just investing $100 a ‘sponsor’ would make a profit of about $800.

The 2008 Harmonised Election in Zimbabwe was arguably the most historic of the post-independence elections, as for the first time in the last 28 years the ruling party lost its parliamentary majority and the President lost the first round of the Presidential election. This result represented the culmination of a decade of political and civic opposition to a former liberation party whose legitimacy has been greatly eroded by nearly three decades of intolerant rule.
